Opae ula, also known as Hawaiian red shrimp or volcano shrimp, are small shrimp species native to Hawaii. They typically inhabit shallow tidal pools across the Hawaiian Islands, where they flourish in brackish water — a natural mix of freshwater and seawater.

These shrimp are easily recognized by their red color, which comes from their high levels of hemocyanin, a copper-based protein that transports oxygen in their blood. Remarkably, they can live for a long time compared to other shrimp species, with some individuals surviving up to 20 years in the wild.

Opae ula are extremely resilient, capable of enduring a variety of environmental conditions, including low oxygen and acidic waters. They can also reproduce without a mate through a form of asexual reproduction, allowing a single shrimp to establish an entire colony.

Please note, these shrimp turn bright red with the proper lighting and food. When they ship to you they will be much more bland but will quickly color up over the following months.
